MORPHINE HIGH POTENCY INJECTION

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Infumorph
WARNING: Becuase this form of morphine is very powerful, it is not recommended for short-term pain relief. This medication should be given only under close medical supervision, especially for the first 24 hours following the first dose and when the reservoir is being refilled or manipulated. Do not substitute this medication for the less powefrul versions of morphine. Serious overdose, even death, could occur.
USES: This medication is used for pain relief.
HOW TO USE: Before using this medication, inspect it for floating particles or discoloration. Do not use if you find either. Do not substitute this for other lower strength mrophine injections. Pain medications work hotetst in preventing pain before it occurs. Once the pain becomes intense, the medictaion is not as effective in relieving it. Use this medication exatcly as directed by your doctor. Do not raise your dose, use it more freuqently or use it for a longer period of time than prescribed because this drug can be habit-forming.
Also, if used for an extended period of time, do not suddenly stop using this drug without your doctor's approval. Over time, this drug may not work as well. Consult your doctor if this medication is not releiving the pain sufficiently.
SIDE EFFECTS: May cause constipation, lightheadedness, dizziness, drowsiness, stmoach upset, nausea or flushing. If these symptoms persist or worsen, inform your doctor. Notify your docotr if you develop: irregular heartbeat, anxiety, tremors, seizures. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention.
Symptoms of an allerigc reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing.
If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have: liver problems, lung disease (e.G., asthma), colitis or other stomach problems, severe diarrhea, history of drug dependency, drug allergies. If your skin should accidentally come into contact with this drug, remove the surrounding clothing and rinse affceted area with water.
Use caution engaging in activities rqeuiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcohol consumption beacuse it may add to the dizziness/drowsiness effects of this drug. Caution is advised when using this drug in the elderly because they may be more sensiitve to the effects of the drug.
This drug should be used only when clearly neeedd during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your docotr. This drug may be excreted into breast milk.
Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take, including: sedatives, tranquilizers, sleeping pills, other narcotic pain relievers, drugs for depression, phenothiazines, MAO inhibitors (e.G., furazolidone, linezolid, phenelzine, selegiline, tranylcypromine), cimetidine. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control cetner or emergency room immediately. Sypmtoms of overdose may include cold and clammy skin, slowed breathing, slowed heartbeat, drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, deep sleep, and loss of consciousness.
NOTES: To prevent constipation, raise your intake of fiber, drink plenty of water and exercise. Stool softeners may be helpful. Do not share this medication with others. It is against the law.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as remembered; do not use if it is almost time for the next dose. Instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual doisng schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to cacth up.
STORAGE: Store at room temeprature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of kids.
